Natural Headache Remedies

headache-girl-620x294Headaches can be a real nuisance if left untreated, but natural remedies for them seem few and far between. Luckily, natural remedies are actually quite common, but typically unheard of.

Before trying a natural remedy it is best to identify what kind of headache you have. Types of headaches include tension, cluster, migraine, and sinus. Depending on the type of headache you will need to use a different natural solution as each solution works more or less effectively depending on the type of headache.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common. They occur when the muscles in the face, usually above the brow, are strained or furrowed for long periods of time without a break. Stress is a contributing factor to most tension headaches, as is lack of sleep. Tension headaches can be avoided by relaxing muscles with massages or another form of relaxation therapy.

However, for more immediate relief there are several solutions. Ginger tea, which can be made by adding one-and-one-half teaspoons of peeled, crushed ginger to a cup of boiled water, will usually do the trick. Inflammation in the muscles will usually be reduced in about the time it takes for a pain medication like Tylenol to work. Add lemon juice and a dash of sugar for a better taste. Applying peppermint oil around your hairline, or across the upper part of your brow, is another excellent solution. The oil creates a tingling sensation that will relax the muscles in your face and release the tension that caused the headache to begin with.

Cluster Headaches

Large temperature shifts during Winter and Spring can lead to cluster headaches, which are largely dependent on region. Cluster headaches are best described as a heavy, stabbing pain along the temples and forehead over a series of days. Luckily, capsaicin cream is an excellent treatment. Apply a small amount of cream inside both nostrils to relieve the pain.

Migraine Headaches

Considered the worst headaches in terms of pain, migraines are thought to be genetic and caused when the body struggles to process pain. There are few natural remedies, but feverfew, which is a type of sunflower oil, is one of them. Feverfew dispels inflammation throughout the body and allows nerves to resume their natural functions without interference.

Sinus Headaches
Sinus headaches are the second most common form of headaches and are caused by allergies. Allergy season, which occurs around the middle of Spring, is usually the worst time for sinus headaches, but they can occur any time during the year. Spark Relief Blend, which is a combination of natural ingredients including peppermint, lavender, and wintergreen, is an excellent solution. Spark Relief Blend comes in capsule form and can be purchased online.
